Presidents Message:

Summer is just around the corner. As most of you are aware our regular classes typically close for summer until September.

In past years, some of our classes have continued with some sort of studio activity. I would like to encourage others to form painting groups on those days that will be open.

Please, check your own schedules and make plans with others in your classes. I, for one, would like to take part in, and help organize, at least one of these groups. If any of you are at all interested, please let me know and we can

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WOULD LIKE TO THANK THESE FABULOUS MEMBERS!!!

The OSA Board of Directors would like to publicly thank the following members for their outstanding contributions to the organization. When you see these "jewel-members", be sure to let them know how fantastic they are for giving so generously of their time to the club! JANE PACE and JEANNE HODGES are longtime members who have taken care of the day meeting kitchen work for many years. Jane recently retired from the serving, set up and cleaning duties. Jeanne is continuing this much-appreciated task by herself. Thank you, Jane and Jeanne!

MARY HARTZHEIM deserves a huge thank you for her dedication to work in the office. She is an invaluable "right hand woman" to Jack Miller, President and Virginia Grubb, Membership Chairman, and many other members.

FRANCES ADAMS has been helping tirelessly for many months with evening meeting kitchen duties. We love you, Frances!

And, thanks to BARBARA and BOB MERCER for cleaning, and painting the walls and cabinets of the OSA kitchen. WOW, it looks fantastic! The Mercers bought the paint and worked together 6 1/2 hours to produce a much more inviting and hygienic space for our club. This is the kind of club member we can all take a lesson from! Thank you, Barbara and Bob!

Review of Night Meeting, March 20, 2003
Presenter: Harold Walkup Watercolorist. Harold's demonstration was of a "striking quality" winter night scene. For Gray he uses Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sienna, more blue for cool and more Burnt Sienna for the warm side. He uses strong contrasts for dramatic effects. Adds small details, not visible from a distance. Uses spatter, water and opaque white for "snow" and scratch out for trees. With his palette knife he carves rocks. His X strokes with a large brush provide background effects. His light seems to come from a higher source.

Day Meeting:

Thursday, May 8, doors open at 10 a.m., meeting at 11 a.m.

Jeff Burke, Hipbone Studio, will demonstrate skull anatomy for beginners.

Jeff started his career in New York City as a model for artists in 1980. He learned his anatomy as an assistant to professors Salvatore Montano and Alfonse Soliemene at the Pratt Institute and with Eliot Goldfinger at the New York Academy of Art. For 6-years he worked as a full time model and demonstrator of anatomy at New York's best art schools. Through studying and his work he has become a teacher of anatomy for artists and sculptors.

Night Meeting:

Thursday, May 15, doors open at 6 p.m., meeting at 8 p.m.

Jeff Burke, Hipbone Studio, Facial Expressions and the Anatomy thereof.

Jeff moved to Portland in 1987 and started Hipbone Studio located at 2342 SE Ankeny. See his website: www.hipbonestudio.com. The studio features classes in anatomy, life drawing session, sculpting and painting, all working with live models. Some of his former class participants say:

"My understanding and appreciation of the complexities, rhythm and beauty of the human form have grown immeasurably thanks to Jeff's classes." - James Torson, Freelance Graphic Designer and Illustrator.

"Jeff brings enthusiasm and complete knowledge to this complex subject. His unique methods for conveying this information have enabled me to see more clearly when drawing the figure and helped me in making my personal expression." - William Park, Painter-Printmaker

The Critique Group:

6:30 p.m. preceding the Thursday night meeting.

Bring your paintings and join us in our critique session. Garve Beckham will lead. We urge you to participate. Should we have too many paintings we may have to limit the number shown per person. If you don't have art to present, please come, observe, and join in the discussion.
